The walk: "Bernardez" Summit

This walk is about 30 min drive from "La Bréole" village where our family summer tour takes place.
This loop walk is a very nice mix of larch trees forest, alpine pastures and rocky fields walks.
The view from the summit is magnificent: to the North, the Ecrins and Devoluy mountains; to the South, the Blanche Mountains and Estrops valley, to the Est Laverq and Ubaye valleys and to the West, the Blanche valley!

  • Distance: 13km;
  • Ascent: 1021m;
  • Expected time: 8 to 9 hours
  • Altitude "Bernardez" summit: 2344m
  • Difficulty: challenging, you need to be fit and well trained for this walk.

Recommendations:
Walk at a steady pace, bring 2 litres of water per person.
The way down from Bernardez summit to Bernardez pass is a bit aerial and not recommended for adults afraid of highs and children.

Leaving La Bréole, take the direction of Barcelonnette, join Seyne by the "Col Saint Jean" (road D900). In Seyne, follow the D207 road, at the cross section, take right the D607 road in direction of St Pons. At the entrance of St Pons take the road to the left and follow the signs to the "Maison Forestière de Bellevue". Ignore the transversal roads and climb up to the end of the main road (last part is a  non tarmac road) where you will park.
Take the forest road to the North-East that goes to the "Col Bas". Then, after about 15min walk, you will spot a path on your right (blue and yellow signs- PR track).
Join the pass (2113m) where you will spot a shepherd house recently renovated.
Then, go down toward remains of lakes (most of the time you will only spot typical wet areas' grass and flowers). Walk at the foot of the ridge "Crête du Laveyret" and cross it at the pass to go around the Savernes summit.
Then, take South and walk up the "Vallon de l'Ambouin" in direction of the ridge that will lead you to the Bernardez summit.
Enjoy the view!
For the way down, follow the ridge South East to the Bernardez pass (Col de Bernardez); need some attention as it is aerial. Then follow the GR6 and join again the car park.
